Short Story
Rain was pouring down in Noir Alley. The faint light from flickering streetlights made long shadows. Detective Marcus fixed his trench coat and looked around the empty street. The air smelled of wet concrete and hopelessness. He heard a quiet voice behind him.
Detective Marcus saw Ava come out of the shadows. Her red scarf stood out against the dark background.
Marcus instinctively touched his gun. "YouDidn't I tell you to stay away from this case.
" Ava smiled"You need me, Marcus. I know this neighborhood better than anyone. "
Marcus frowned"This place is full of secrets. " He looked at a closed-up store. "And you're hiding something.
" Ava's face showed surprise for a moment, but then she composed herself. "I'm a journalist, not a suspect. You can either let me help or let this case be forgotten like the others. "
Before Marcus could answer, they heard a faint metallic sound from a nearby alley. "Stay behind me," Marcus said as he pulled out his gun.
They moved carefully toward the noise. When they turned the corner, a figure suddenly appeared from the dark. Marcus pointed his gun but stopped when he saw the man look at him with recognition.

"Gabe," he whispered, lowering his gun. The man stood still. "Marcus, you don't know what's going on. Why are you back in Noir Alley. "
"I'm just trying to survive," Gabe replied, his voice shaky.
"You think you're chasing a killer, but it's more complicated than that. They are watching you, and they're watching her too.
" He nodded toward Ava. "Who" Marcus asked, stepping closer.
Before Gabe could respond, a gunshot was heard, and he fell to the ground with blood spreading around him. Marcus turned quickly, but the street was deserted. "Get" he shouted, pulling Ava behind a dumpster.
"This is crazy," Ava said, breathing quickly. "No," Marcus replied, looking at the rooftops.
"This is Noir Alley, and someone doesn't want us here.
" Ava took a deep breath and whispered, "There's something you need to know.
" Marcus looked at her closely and said, "Start talking. "
"I think I know who the killer is," Ava said, her voice shaking.
"But they’re not only after you, Marcus. They want me too.
" Marcus tightened his jaw. The rain hid his growing worry, but it was obvious that the dark corners of Noir Alley were getting closer, and neither of them could be sure they would escape safely.
